Bruder re-elected chair

District 2 commissioner Allan Bruder has taken on the duties of chairman of the Presque Isle County Board of Commissioners for the third straight year, after his unanimous election at Tuesday morning’s annual organizational meeting. The meeting started with all five commissioners reciting the oath of office. Clerk Sue Rhode then asked if there were any nominations for chairman.

Gary Wozniak nominated Bruder and when there were no other nominations, Mike Darga made a motion to close the nominations and cast a unanimous ballot for Bruder. “I think the last two years the commission has operated together,” said Bruder, the longest serving member of the board. “I think the five-member board is a perfect number. Everybody has something to do and nobody is left out.”

AFTER THE census of 2000, re-apportionment trimmed the number of board members from eight to five. It’ll be Bruder’s fifth time in the role of chairman. He served consecutive terms in the 1990s. Wozniak was nominated as vice chairman for another term and Stephen Lang made a motion to close nominations after no other names were thrown into the hat. Wozniak has served as vice chairman since January 2002. Also as part of the organizational meeting, meeting dates and times were set for 2005, and remain unchanged.

The semi-monthly meetings will be conducted the second Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. and the last Friday at 9:30 a.m. The exceptions will be the statutory budget meeting in October and if a meeting date falls on a holiday. The board adopted the county’s amended Ru

les of Order and approved disclosure resolutions. The chairman and vice chairman also were designated with the responsibility of closing the courthouse because of weather or other emergencies.

BRUDER SAID he was “going to make a few changes” with committee assignments. Lang was appointed to chair the personnel committee, taking over for Wozniak. Bob Schell will join him on the committee. Wozniak will serve as an alternate. Wozniak declined an invitation to take over as chairman of the finance committee, but will serve on the committee with Bruder, who will lead it as chairman. Lang is the alternate.

Schell and Darga make up the courthouse and grounds committee, while Darga and Lang are the two board members on the public health and safety committee. Wozniak will be the alternate on both committees. The board scheduled a special meeting Friday at 7 p.m. to set the 2005 salaries for elected and appointed officials. The first regularly scheduled meeting of the year is Wednesday, January 12.
