Two teachers honored with Cardinal pins for continued dedication to students

Two individuals who have gone above and beyond the call of duty in the Onaway Area Community Schools were honored with prestigious Cardinal pins Monday at the board of education meeting. Teachers Kelly Moran and Mark Grant are the latest recipients.

Board president Sue Nelson said Moran “gives so much of herself to her teaching and students.” This past fall, Moran organized a field trip where she took 30 students to the Black River for water testing. “This experience was not only educational, but it helps an environmental group keep an eye on the health of this very important local stream,” Nelson said. Moran also arranged a trip to Hope College, exposing students to the world of forensic science and giving them a glimpse of college campus life.

Grant organized a motivational speaker to visit with student athletes, coaches, and parents. It proved to be a tremendous success with more than 60 people in attendance. “Mark is the type of individual we want as a role model for our students,” said Nelson. “He constantly preaches good sportsmanship and demands that his students and athletes give their absolute all. The students and athletes Mark works with are much better people because of his positive influence and impact.”

In other matters to come before the board: o The annual audit for the school year ending June 30 was presented and accepted. The audit was performed by Douglas Wohlberg, CPA. o The Art Club received approval of its trip to New York. The group has been planning it for two years. The cheerleaders also received approval to travel to a competitive cheer event in Auburn Hills. The next school board meeting will be conducted Monday, January 10.
