Driver takes out two elk on M-33

Drivers encountered two late fall hazards that prevented them from reaching their destinations this week, according to the Presque Isle County Sheriff’s Department. One accident was weather related, while another incident involved a fury, four-legged road obstruction. The latest of the incidents on a west Presque Isle County road occurred on M-33 near Three Mile Highway Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Allis Township. Lynn Warren Roemer, 55, of Onaway was on M-33 in a 1996 pickup when he struck and killed two bull elk standing in the road.

There were no reported injuries to the driver. Tuesday at 11:25 a.m., a NEMSCA bus, carrying four passengers, encountered icy conditions on Twin School Highway in North Allis Township. The driver lost control of the vehicle near South Palmer Road and went into the ditch.

Valley Towing of Onaway assisted at the scene. There were no injuries. A department spokesman said there have been seven reported accidents in the county since Monday, but four of them were vehicle/deer crashes. It means drivers, for the most part, are using caution on the roads, with winter weather driving conditions now here for several months.
