Four named to SAC teams

Several Hurons football players have beeb honored by the Straits Area Conference. On offense, junior Cody Wenzel made the first team as a receiver. He led the Hurons with 31 receptions for 640 yards (20.1 ave.) and eight touchdowns. He also had two catches for PATs. In addition, he made the first team as a kicker.

SENIOR TACKLE Tyler Gorlewski made the second team as an offensive lineman. He also made second team as a linebacker. Defensively, he had 58 tackles and 24 assists. Junior quarterback Austin Fairbanks earned honorable mention on the squad. He connected on 62-of-160 passes (39 percent) for 1,087 yards and 10 TDs. Fairbanks led the team in rushing with 394 yards on 72 carries (5.5 ave) and seven touchdowns.

Dylan Centala earned second team, all-SAC as a defensive back. The junior led the team in solo tackles with 62, while assisting on 21 others. The SAC offensive player of the year was Isaac Viau, a senior running back from Cheboygan. The defensive player of the year was lineman Matt Payment, a junior from Newberry.

THE HURONS lose four players to graduation this season. Along with Gorlewski, a three-year starter on the line, lost will be defensive back Matt Tomas (39 tackles, 20 assists), lineman Jeff Cornett (45 tackles, 21 assists), and center Scott Kamyszek. Returning running backs will be Tyler Schuiteman (68 carries, 347 yards, 5.1 ave. three TD), Centala (88 carries, 337 yards, 3.8 ave.) and Trent Holmes (14 carries, 45 yards, 3.2 ave.). On the season, the team rushed for 1,159 yards on 248 attempts for a 4.7 average and 12 TDs. With 1,087 yards passing, the team totaled 2,246 yards. Defensively, the Hurons allowed 3,214 yards rushing on 466 attempts for a 6.9 average and 34 TDs. The team allowed 654 yards on the air, as opposing teams completed 30-of-69 attempts with nine TDs and eight interceptions. The 1-8 Hurons were outscored 291-164 on the season. With only four graduating seniors, and a schedule which will not include bigger schools Sault Ste. Marie and Cheboygan, prospects for an improved season next year look good.
