Sheriff’s report-Week 40

Monday at 7:38 a.m., there was a report of a breaking and entering of property owned by Scott Sunderland on East Grand Lake Highway in Presque Isle Township. The caller told officers it’s not the first time the residence had been targeted by thieves. It didn’t appear as if anything was missing. The case remains under investigation.

Football equipment was stolen from Posen High School last Thursday, apparently during the girls basketball game between Posen and Au Gres. The Arenac County Sheriff’s Department made a stop of a vehicle with two male subjects from Au Gres in it. Deputies observed Posen football gear in the vehicle and questioned them about the items. The subjects, both 20, confessed to stealing the gear. Taken were two football helmets valued at $240 and two shoulder pads. Total cost of the stolen items was placed at $440. Larceny charges may be pursued.

A St. Clair Shores man was arrested September 23 at 11 p.m. on a charge of operating a vehicle while under the influence. Officers noticed a 2004 Dodge pickup parked in the road on 634 Highway in Belknap Township, with lights on and the engine running. There was one occupant behind the steering wheel, a 43-year-old subject, who was sleeping. Officers noted that the man was sound asleep with an open bottle of beer between his legs. The driver was confused at first, hesitated to open the door or open the window, and actually turned the stereo up louder before getting out and answering the officers’ questions. There was a strong odor of intoxicants coming from the subject, according to the incident report. He admitted to drinking all day and to having “way too much” to drink, the report states. The subject was transported to the Presque Isle County jail.

An Onaway woman crashed her vehicle attempting to avoid a flock of turkeys in the middle of North Allis Highway at 8:10 a.m. last Thursday in North Allis Township. Donna Mae Harrison was eastbound in a 2002 Dodge, a half mile east of County Line Road, and the sun was shining in her eyes when she saw the birds crossing the road. Harrison swerved to miss the turkeys, causing her to loose control of the car. Harrison’s vehicle went into the ditch and only struck one of the turkeys. The vehicle was driveable and Harrison, who was wearing her seatbelt, was uninjured.

A 27-year-old Rogers City man was involved in a rollover accident September 22 at 7:40 a.m. in Rogers Township. Richard Mark Sharon was southbound on US-23 in a 1993 Ford, a half-mile south of County Road 634 Highway, and apparently fell asleep. He lost control and crossed the centerline, where he struck a vehicle driven by Annette Yvonne-Leone Carter of Rogers City in the rear quarter area. Sharon’s vehicle continued into the ditch on the east side of US-23 and overturned once. Neither of the drivers nor the two passengers in the Carter vehicle were injured. Sharon’s vehicle received extensive damage and had to be towed from the scene.
