Special Olympic torch run for “Bert” 10 years ago, September 29, 1994

New Presque Isle District librarian Wendy Carter was no stranger to the Rogers City area. The granddaughter of Margaret and Captain Robert Schepler, she had many fond childhood memories of Rogers City.

Little progress was reported by negotiators following a mediation session, the latest attempt to arrive at a contract agreement for Rogers City Area Schools teachers.

A Special Olympics torch run was dedicated to the memory of Norberta “Bert” Woloszyk. Magistrate Keith Gordon, Rogers City police officers Scott Marx, Matt Quaine, Ken Bielas, and sheriff’s deputy Bobbie Libby ran the event along with the Olympians.

Rogers City Kiwanians officially designated October 9 as “Clergy Appreciation Day.” It was planned as an effort to acknowledge the contribution of, and pressures facing, religious leaders in the 1990s.

It was a much-anticipated first win of the season for the Posen Vikings in Au Gres. The Vikes won 20-6, giving coach Glenn Budnick his first varsity win.

20 years ago, September 27, 1984

With a DNR biologist watching, a net with 3,300 salmon was pulled in from a weir on the Swan River. This catch, which weighed in at 28,000 pounds, was the first indication of just how many salmon were returning to the Swan River from a total planting of one million the year before.

Viola Reisener of Rogers City was the first prize winner in the Fiddler’s Jamboree conducted in Metz.

30 years ago, September 26, 1974

Annika Bengtsson, foreign exchange student from Sweden, was chosen as RCHS homecoming queen. Her court was Mary Bellmore, freshman; Roberta Centala, sophomore; and Tammy Wenzel, junior.

The Posen Vikings recorded their third straight win, 34-6 over Arenac Eastern. The victory put the Vikings in sole possession of first place in the North Star League with a 2-0 mark.

Mr. Ed’s Foodliner advertised Hills Bros. Coffee three pound cans for $2.99, and hamburger at 99 cents a pound.

40 years ago, September 24, 1964

The highlight of the 12th ann

ual Posen Potato Festival was the crowning of queen Diane Hentkowski by Detroit mayor Jerome Cavanagh.

Rogers City started off the football season in fine style by knocking off Charlevoix 33-0 in a game played on the Rayders’ field. Tommy Gilbertson was the Hurons’ big offensive threat, scoring three TD’s.

Showing at the Rogers City Theater was “Gun Hawk” starring Rory Calhoun, Rod Cameron, and Rita Lee.

60 years ago, September 28, 1944

Rogers City opened the 1944 football season with a 25-7 trouncing of Cheboygan. Len Kowalski scored the first touchdown for Rogers City.
