Defense fuels 27 point win against Hale; Arenac and RC on tap

The defense of the Posen Viking girls basketball team turned in another smothering performance Tuesday against Hale. Posen coach Tom Schellie started the girls in a half court trap in the first half and watched his squad build a 15-point halftime lead. As the ball was inbounded to open the second half, the Vikings added points to their side of the scoreboard and limited the Eagles to next to nothing. Whitney Meeder got things rolling with the first two buckets of the second half, one off a steal she took in for a lay-up.

Katie Lewandowski knocked down a jumper and Posen was up by 21, and well on the way to a win. Hale struggled against the stifling Viking “D,” scoring four points in a six-minute span in the third quarter. With the 59-32 win, Posen would improve its record to 9-4 overall and 7-2 in the North Star League.

“THE SECOND HALF we came out and ran the press pretty good,” said Schellie. “We got some steals out of that. Defense won the game for us tonight and we got some good transition points off of that.” It also was an important bounce-back game, after a 67-54 loss to league-rival Mio, which put a real damper on Posen’s conference title hopes.

“We still have to win every game in the league because if there is a chance that Mio is going to lose, that would be great, but we still have to win every single game we play in the league,” said Meeder. Schellie told the girls “the pressure is off of us, let’s just go out there and have some fun. There is nothing we can do about the league right now. Right now we need some help to win the league. We just have to go out and win our game.” Meeder had a game-high 15 points, was second on the team with seven rebounds, and added three steals.

MARY CALHOUN, after a season-high 24 game performance against Mio, had 14 against Hale. Roxann Hincka had eight points and nine rebounds, after an 18-point game against the Thunderbolts. Megan Latz had eight points against the Eagles. The Vikings hav

e their last home game of the month tonight at Arenac Eastern and then it will be round two of the county battles with Rogers City. If the encore is anything like the first game, it’ll be well worth the price of admission. The Hurons edged Posen in the first game. The schools split the series last year.

THE JUNIOR VARSITY results were similar to the varsity; a win against Hale and a loss against Mio. Their record stands at 8-5 overall and 5-3 in the North Star League heading into tonight’s contest against Arenac. The JV starts the basketball doubleheader at 6 p.m., with the varsity game to follow.

Jenny Ciarkowski had a team-high 11 points against Hale. She was followed by Melissa Wekwert with eight. Megan Haske and Kori Latz each scored six. Ciarkowski had 19 points against Mio, while Michelle Mulka came through for nine points.
