Paull still strong at 40, wins 11th Nautical run;

There were no surprises this year in the male category of the Nautical City Run/Walk for Health 6K (3.72 miles) race as Cheboygan veterinarian Denny Paull earned his third straight first place finish with a time of 19.25. Paull, an 11 time champion of the event, has participated in 22 of the 23 festival runs. Second place went to Ryan Hagen, 33, of Lonemont (19.36), while Lyle Schultz, 22, of Alpena (19.58), took third.. The three were the only placers to run the race under 20 minutes.

Paull said he drafted Schultz for a portion of the race to conserve energy and when the time was right, he broke away for the victory. Dave Partyka, 20, (fourth) and Rocky DeRoque, 20, (fifth) were Rogers City’s top placers. Partyka, who is running cross country at Lake Superior State University and studying to be a math teacher, nipped DeRoque by two-hundredths of a second. Partyka was pleased with the excellent weather conditions, and when asked about knocking off Paull from the top spot, he said “maybe next year.” Much of the race run was on the Huron Sunrise Trail.

THE FEMALE champion was Britta Trepp, 19, of Traverse City (23.42), who was 16th overall. “It felt good,” said Trepp of taking top honors. The Hope College cross country runner, who was a little taken back by the media coverage of the Advance, was visiting Rogers City with her boyfriend Rob Hanel. The fourth through eighth positions belonged to runners who claim Rogers City as home. Aaron Smuda, 18, who graduated in June from RCHS, was 7th overall (21.03), while Derek McLennan, 16, was the youngest placer from Rogers City (21.34, eighth).

“The weather was great,” said race director Stacey Malocha. “I thought everything went really well on Saturday. “I couldn’t have done it without Charlie Fairbanks, or the parents of the track athletes, Julie Windy, and all of the sponsors.” Fairbanks officially past the baton to Malocha, introducing her to the runners at the start line. Malocha then started the race. “I still have some medals that were to be given out to runners, but they left before we called their name,” said Malocha. Participant who placed are encouraged to call Malocha at 989-734-2183 to receive their award.
