Millersburg to host Presque Isle County fair this weekend

Today is officially the second day of the Presque Isle County Fair in Millersburg, but it’s when the bulk of the activities really start getting underway. The fair is being conducted over the next four days, through Sunday on the county fairgrounds east of Millersburg Road on Walker Highway. The first county fair queen, as far as anyone knows, will be crowned tonight. The queen’s pageant begins at 6 p.m. in a tent set up on the fairgrounds.

The four contestants are: the reigning Miss Onaway Autumn Chesnutt, and Jillian Liedtke, Vanessa Paquin, and Lacey Karsten, all of Rogers City. Organizer Teresa Splan didn’t believe there was going to be a queen’s pageant until all four girls signed up just prior to the deadline.

THE CONTESTANTS will be judged on an interview with the judges, talent, evening gown, and a random question in front of the audience. The girls also will perform an opening number to the TV theme song, “Green Acres.” Along with the crowning of the fair queen, a first and second runner-up and Miss Congeniality will be named.

The fair queen will win a $400 scholarship and represent the county fair at events over the next year. Schmidt Amusements begins its four-day run today at 4 p.m. until dusk. The company was expected to bring eight rides. The annual ice cream and pie social is from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. and entertainment will be provided by the “Over the Hill Gang,” from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. today. Exhibits start arriving today and will be judged between noon and 5 p.m.

ON FRIDAY, which is being called “Kids Day,” the first 100 kids will receive free popcorn. Animal entries start arriving Friday at 7 a.m., with judging of the small animals to take place at 1 p.m. The exhibits will be open from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m., the carnival rides continue from noon until dark, and

entertainment will be provided by the “Banjo Pickers.” There also will be a hands-on knitting display starting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday is “Ag Day,” with the first 100 kids receiving a free farm coloring book.

The large animals will be judged at 10 a.m., with the 4-H auction to begin at 6 p.m.

STAYING WITH the theme of the day, a draft horse pull is scheduled from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by Gloria Lynne from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The final day of the fair has been dubbed “Patriotic Day” as the first 100 kids will receive a red, white, and blue pencil.

There will be a horse speed show at noon, a horseshoe event, a gospel choir at 2 p.m., and the raffle drawing of the $19,000 tractor at 3 p.m. There will be a $1 gate fee per person, per day, or a $5 fee per family per day.
