Bruders lead locally-sponsored team to third straight title

Hardies Electric of Hillman defended its title and took first place over the weekend in the 2004 Nautical Festival Women’s Softball Tournament. Sponsored by Chris Hardies, the team includes the three Bruder sisters, Sherri, Heather, and Holly, former Rogers City softball players. The team earned a 9-2 victory over C & G Painting of Mt. Pleasant in the championship game at the Hole. Hardies Electric was undefeated going into the finals at the Hole on Sunday, whereas C & G Painting had to come through the loser’s bracket after being defeated in the first game of the tournament by Hardies. Key hits, great defensive plays, and strong baserunning led to a solid victory.

“It was a team effort,” said co-manager Vicki Bruder. Hardies Electric, managed by Butch and Vicki Bruder, ended up going 6-0 again this year to repeat as champions. Strong support of family and friends who called themselves “The Herd” from Bruder’s farm was appreciated by the team. Taking MVP honors this year was Hardies shortstop Brandee Brower.

Eighteen women’s teams participated this year and enjoyed the softball action sponsored by the Posen Fire Department and run by Frank Wozniak. Teams from as far away as Detroit competed with many local teams being represented as well. This is the ninth year the Bruder girls have brought a team to the Nautical tournament and their plans are to defend the title in 2005.
