North Carolina woman dies in a diving accident

A 42-year-old woman from North Carolina died in a diving accident Sunday on Lake Huron, approximately seven miles northeast of Rockport. The accident occurred during the first dive of the day, while Suzanne Frances Johnson was surfacing. The victim and two companions were on a charter dive and were diving a wreck in approximately 200 feet of water.

Johnson, of Timberlake, North Carolina, a north central community of 2,600 in Person County, was brought onboard where emergency personnel were called and CPR performed. Efforts to revive the woman were unsuccessful. The cause of death was unknown as of Monday, according to a press release from the Presque Isle County Sheriff?s Department.

A sheriff?s department spokesman said an autopsy was to be performed in Alpena, but the preliminary investigation indicates the incident is ?not suspicious.? The boat was chartered out of Wisconsin.

The Presque Isle County Sheriff?s Department was assisted by the United States Coast Guard of Alpena, which responded to the scene and transported the victim back to shore.
