Local developer looks to fill 42 lakefront condos

Plans are coming together for the lakefront development project, named the Harborage Condominiums at Rogers City, to be built north of the Rogers City Marina. To be constructed on the site of the former Vogelheim Lumber Company lumberyard, the project will house 42 upscale condominiums, if fully developed. John Vogelheim, owner of the property said enthusiasm has been building for the project since first announced last year shortly after the lumber and hardware business closed.

?We?ve got a lot of interest in this project. It will be good for the town,? he said. Vogelheim said the developer is Rankauff-Singer, a company which has built similar properties in Boyne City and East Jordan.

PLANS CALL for sales of the 1,300 square-foot condos to begin immediately at a price tag of $263,000 for the three-bedroom units. Vogelheim said details of the project were announced to invited real estate agents in the local area Wednesday. A luncheon to explain the project, hosted by the developers, gave agents a chance to see plans for the project and ask question

s. According to Vogelheim, the building which housed the lumber business will remain, with the condo project to be constructed between it and Lake Huron north of Huron Avenue. Plans call for as many as 11 buildings to be built on the site, once cleanup has been completed. Possibilities exist for private boat dockage at the complex.

DEMOLITION OF the remains of the lumber buildings has been ongoing, Vogelheim said, with the first new buildings set for construction on the north end of the property, just south of city property, next spring. Construction is contingent on the selling of eight units by fall, he said.

City manager John Bruning said the developers have offered to allow the bike trail to run through the property, providing riders and walkers a view of the lake as they pass through the property. Bruning said the details have not been worked out yet on a deal to have Community Development Authority funds assist with the construction of possible sewer, water, and public roads in the development.
