Both RC baseball and softball in state quarterfinals
The Hurons defended the home turf Saturday as both the softball, coach by Karl Grambau, and the baseball, coached by Howard Madsen, won regional championships in Rogers City.
Both the boys and girls teams will travel to Elk Rapids for a quarterfinal game at noon.
Each team overcame adversity to win. For the baseball team, a grand slam homer by Judd Vekaryasz in the bottom of the seventh inning rescued his team in the semifinal win over Gaylord St. Mary.
The girls had drama of their own in the championship game with Ellsworth. Ashley Fleming delivered a two-run triple then scored the winning run on a ground out by C. J. Calabrese in a 5-4 win.
