Greene, Smuda and Blackmer going to state track finals

Three Rogers City Huron track team members, Kyle Greene, Aaron Smuda, and Kristyn Blackmer, will be going to the state finals June 5 at Grand Rapids. Greene qualified in three events Saturday at the Bellaire Regionals: discus second place (148?11?), high jump second place (5? 9?), and shot put second place (45? 8?). Smuda qualified in the 3200-meter run by his fourth place time (10:24.40), and Blackmer qualified in the high jump, second place (4? 7?). The three will join Posen?s Amanda Pieczynski along with Onaway?s Lonnie Splan, Paul Splan, and Randy Hoffmeyer at the state event.

?Presque Isle County was well represented at regionals,? said Huron coach Stacey Malocha. ?Amanda Pieczynski was amazing to watch when she qualified in all three of her events. Onaway?s Lonnie and Paul Splan and Hoffmeyer were also great competitors. ?Onaway?s Marty Diller missed the 1600 and 3200-runs by a mere second, Malocha continued. ?I can?t wait until state to watch all of Presque Isle?s athletes compete. It?s fun to watch students you know enjoy themselves in their sport.?

The Hurons missed having two more students qualify: Paula Vogelheim was ranked number one in the region for the shot put but could not participate because of a severe injury to her wrist. Jessica Hempel, ranked number three in the region in discus, missed regionals because of a prior commitment involving playing the flute overseas this summer.
